The difference between Yogyakarta and Central Java

Yogyakarta is special region in Indonesia located in Central Java.

But different with central Java which is led by a governor Yogyakarta is led  by sultan namely Sultan Hamengkubuwono.

Today yogyakarta is led by Sultan Hamengkubuwono X.And if he passway will replaced by his succesor.But he has no son only daugthers.So the succession will be interesting.

Why Yogyakarta is very attractive?

Why yogyakarta is very attractive because this city is very creative and live for 24 hours.So interesting!!

In yogyakarta whenever you hungry you just go out from your hostel then you will find cafe or street foods.

But the more important is Yogyakarta is a city that show art and culture.So you will find something new in Yogyakarta.

As i mention earlier that yogyakarta is very attractive and rich with tourist attractions so i suggested you to stay little bit longer.Maybe around 4 days.

And here is the places that you should visit from day 1

1.Taman Sari : Taman Sari is a garden that has unique architecture,mixture of  javanese and portuguese architecture.located in the middle of city.

 

2. Yogyakarta Sultanate Palace

Yogyakarta Palace is official palace of the Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X.

located in Yogyakarta city,this palace was built by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I in 1755 as a new Yogyakarta Palace.This palace is a fraction of the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace from the Surakarta Sultanate.due to the split of Islamic Mataram with Giyanti agreement

The palace serves as a cultural center for the Javanese people and contains a museum that displays the sultanate’s artifacts.

 

3.Malioboro Street

Malioboro street is the most popular street in Yogyakarta.Located in the heart of yogyakarta city.this street is very popular because related with Javenese mithology.

If you want to spend your night to hangout or you want to buy souvenir from yogyakarta.So Malioboro street is perfect place to find it.you will see many shops that sell handycraft or anything that you need to bring back to your home country.

On Malioboro street many tourist from both local or foreigner spend their time and having fun.

You will see street performance from local artist,they are dancing tradional dance with traditional instrument.

4. Borobudur Temple

Borobudur is a Buddhist temple located in Magelang 40 km northwest of Yogyakarta. and it was founded by Mahayana Buddhists around the year 800 AD during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty.

If you want to see sunrise in Borobudur,i suggesting you to rent a car plus guide in yogyakarta.Because you will go to Borobudur in early morning maybe around 04 Am,and the best spot to see sunrise in Borobudur is at Manohara’s Hotel.the ticket price for foreigner is around $31 ( breakfast,snack and souveneir ).

Or maybe you want to stay at Manohara’s hotel but it will more expensive because the rate is about $106/night.And it just for room not include ticket for to see sunrise and Borobudur tour.

Located in Prambanan Klaten,17 km from Yogyakarta.Prambanan’s temple is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Ticket price is around $25.The best time to visit is in the morning or evening.

6. Merapi Mountain

 

Merapi is the most active volcano in Java island,and it several times eruption,but when it’s calm,Merapi Mountain can be used as a tourist destination because they have many beautiful spot and you can do some activity there.

7. Kulon Progo

Kulon Progo is a district in the special region of Yogyakarta and the capital is Wates.

The meaning of Kulon Progo is the “West of River Progo“, Progo is the name of the river and Kulon is West.

The distance from Yogyakarta to Kulon Progo is 25 km.So not too far from Yogyakarta.

Tourist Attraction in Kulon Progo

1.River Mudal Park

located in Jati ulyo Village is a waterfall anda bathing pool that is sourced from natural springs.

you can do some activities in River Mudal park such Flying fox, hiking while enjoy the nature,take picture or anything else.

the most interesting in River Mudal is the color of the water is Blue tosca.So it’s beautiful.

But i Suggested you not to go on the weekend because full of local tourist,you should go on weekdays.

The ticket price is IDR 10.000.

2.KaliBiru 

Kalibiru is a tourist destination located in Kalibiru Vilage.the distance from Yogyakarta is about 39 km.

In Kalibiru you can see the beautiful lanscape such the Menoreh hill and if the weather is clear you can see beach from a distance.So you can make beautiful picture from various angles.

there are many facilities that you can try such outbound,camping ground,Reservoir and restaurant or cafe.

3.Kedung Pedut Waterfall

Kedung Pedut Waterfall is one of the natural tourist attraction in Kulon progo.

Kedung Pedut is well known for the beautiful of the water color where there are two color of water clear white and green.

The clear white color occurs because of the heavy flow of water coming from the waterfall next to this Kedung (pool ) while the green Tosca is formed from the reflection of the rocks on the riverbed that are emitted by sunlight.

Ticket price is RP.10.000 for weekdays and Rp 20.000 for weekend but i suggested you to go there on weekdays so you can enjoy without any distraction.

4. Goa Kiskendo ( Kiskendo Cave )

Kiskendo Cave is a natural Cave that show the beauty of nature in Kulon Progo

Kiskendo Cavein the past is a cave that used to as meditation place of the Javanese people.

in the past maybe about  200 years ago that cave is a place to seek the calmness even supranatural power.

The Lenght of Kiskendo Cave

the length of cave is about 1,5 km long in the earth of Menoreh Hill.And there are two ramifications that direct visitors to the former place where ancient javanese people have practiced asceticism

Kiskendo it’s self actually a piece of story in the Puppet.

The atmosphere in the cave is dark,quite and cool so you need helm and flashlight that you can rent from the guide.

Nightlife in Yogyakarta

Malioboro is always full of tourist at night.And in Malioboro there are many local artist that perform many shows.

Before Pandemic even every Tuesday there is a carnaval in the middle of Malioboro street.

But if  you like just to hangout or chit chat with your friends and drink beer you can go to Parangtritis street.

There are many cafe with cool athmosphere that sell beer along the streets and open until midnight.

Parangtritis and Prawirotaman street

Actually there are many place in Yogyakarta that provide many hostel or hotel but for me i suggesting you to stay at Parangtritis and Prawirotaman street.

Why? because Parangtritis and Prawirotaman street is located in the middle of the city of Yogyakarta so very strategic.

There are many cheap hostel and cafe or beer house and in the evening the athmosphere is so fun.

From Parangtritis street to Malioboro only 2 Km and if you want to go to Parangtritis beach only 30 km.

There are also many shops that rent motorbike that you can rent when you visit Yogyakarta so it will make easier to explore every place in Yogyakarta.And the fee for rent a motorbike is about RP 80.000/day.

last but not least

When we talk about Travel guide Yogyakarta there is one exception about a city,namely Solo or Surakarta.

last but not least is Solo city or Surakarta,and why i put in the last row?

the reasons  why i put Solo in the last row because the history  between Solo and Jogjakarta and direction to your next trip.Actually Solo is a part of Central Java but the location of Solo city is right between Central Java and East Java.

And also there is a history between Solo and Yogyaakarta where both of sultanate actually are a family.

The Giyanti agreement on February 13,1755 split the territory of  Islamic Mataram.

it’s devided become two kingdom namely Sultanate of Yogyakarta and the Kasunanan Surakarta.

As your journey to the east will pass through the Solo city,it’s a good idea to stop by in the city of Solo.

Solo is very popular as the center of Batik,even Batik that you found in Yogyakarta actually are from Solo.

Solo also wellknown as the hometown of President Jokowi.The President of Indonesia.

Different with Yogyakarta as a tourism City,Solo is a industrial city.

So if you need good quality of Batik you will find Batik in Solo and the price is cheaper than Yogyakarta.

Solo also wellknown as food heaven in Central Java because there are various delicious foods that you can find.

Triwindu Market : if you are a lover of antiques you should come to Triwindu Market in Solo. Apart from being a location for shopping, this market can also be used as a tourist spot.

Laweyan Batik Village : Kampung batik Laweyan has become an icon of Batik’s Solo and the oldest batik center In Solo after Kauman Batik Village.

Museum Batik Danar Hadi : you can learn how to make batik and you will see the various kinds of beautiful batik.

I think you can spend one night in Solo before you continue your trip to East Java.it’s worth it.
